Murcia earthquake as popular Spanish holiday hotspot for Brits rocked by 4.1 magnitude
British tourists may have been left shaken this morning after a popular holiday region in Spain was rocked by a 4.1 magnitude earthquake as reports it was felt in Murcia and Alicante

A popular holiday destination for Brits in Spain has been rocked by a 4.1 magnitude earthquake as emergency services have been flooded with calls.
The earthquake was reported to have struck Murcia today (August 2) at 11:59am, recorded the National Geographic Institute (IGN). The earthquake comes after Italy was struck by a major quake that damaged buildings, cars and saw around 20 people injured.
Today’s earthquake in Spain reportedly rocked neighbouring areas Alicante, a popular holiday destination for Brits who also head to nearby Benidorm, and Albacete. The active was centred in the town of Librilla at a depth of around 3 miles with it Murcia located about 18 miles away reporting being shook.
The earthquake hit Murcia but was felt as far as Alicante
Many people took to social media claims their “whole house was shaking” and that described it as “very heavy”. Another visitor to Spain described their bed shaking at least twice in his hotel room.
One wrote: “I was at Sunday mass at the San Francisco Mula church. I thought it was a plane gliding by because it was more the noise (acoustics) than the movement that I felt.”
Another wrote: “In Cartagena we’ve felt it too, totally freaking out because I didn’t think it’d be like that but the ground shook a little.”

According to local media, emergency services pushed out alert messages to all phones in the area to warn of possible further shakes.
More than 80 calls were made to emergency services but at this time there have been no reports of any injuries as a result of the earthquake.
There has also been no reports of serious damage, although it is believed emergency services are continuing to investigate and assess the area of impact.

Although there has yet to be reports of damage or injuries, the incident may have brought up tragic memories of an earthquake over 15 years that resulted in lives being lost.
In 2011, a magnitude 5.1earthquake in Lorca saw nine people were killed with streets heavily damaged.
