Dusseldorf tram horror as 27 people injured after two crash into each other

A major incident has prompted a huge emergency services response in Düsseldorf, Germany, after two trams suddenly collided, leaving 27 people injured and requiring medical treatment

Two trams have collided in a horror crash that has resulted in dozens of people being injured in a major German city.

Local reports say 27 people were injured after two trams crashed in Düsseldorf. Five of them reportedly suffered serious injuries during the incident today (May 23) at around 11:30am.

According to officials, fire crews also treated an additional 28 people, but these were reportedly suffered minor injuries.

The two trams collided head-on at the corner of Berliner Allee and Graf-Adolf-Straße. The reason for the crash currently remains unclear.

Fire crew said that most of the passengers were able to exit the trams on their own with no technical rescue required.

According to tram operator Rheinbahn, diversions are currently in place while the trams and debris can be cleared.

Images from the scene show damage to both trams with multiple windows smashed as a result of the crash.

German publication Rheinische Post is claiming hat one of the trams may have been operating on the wrong track at the time of the collision or may have switched tracks in error. However, this is currently unconfirmed.

Some reports have claimed that pedestrians were among those injured in the incident.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: “Fortunately, none of the people we removed from the tracks sustained life-threatening injuries.”

An investigation has been launched into the incident.
