French cyclist Ronan Auge comes out of induced coma after horror crash

French cyclist Ronan Auge has come out of an induced coma after being involved in a horror crash at the Tour de Langkawi in Malaysia.

The 22-year-old sustained serious injuries on stage six of the UCI ProSeries event and was taken to hospital, where he was placed in a medically induced coma to “optimise his treatment”.

His team, Unibet Rose Rockets, described Auge’s condition as “currently stable and not life threatening” in an initial statement on Friday, saying their thoughts were with his family.

After staying in close contact with the medical team in Malaysia, Unibet Rose Rockets have now provided a “positive update” on his health.

“This morning, Ronan woke up from his medically induced coma in Langkawi,” a statement read.

“Given the circumstances, he is doing well. He has been able to move both his arms and legs and is able to communicate.

“We’re incredibly happy and thankful to be able to share the news. Now, step by step, Ronan will focus on his recovery, supported by our medical team in Malaysia.”

Auge’s crash is one of a number of serious recent incidents that have cast a shadow over road cycling in recent months. British rider Fin Tarling, 19, died after a crash with a vehicle at the Volta a Portugal in August.

Auge is a rising star in the sport and earned his first professional win in June, when he was retrospectively awarded victory in stage two of the Route d’Occitanie when Noa Isidore, who crossed the line first, was penalised for excessive use of his elbows in the finish.

The eight-stage Tour de Langkawi concludes on Sunday, with Lennart Jasch of the Tudor Pro Cycling Team leading the way.
