Carpentras infant deaths: Two children, aged 2 and 4, found dead in ‘very hot’ car

Two children have tragically died after reportedly suffering cardiac arrests while sitting in a car parked in a garage during a major heatwave as an investigation has been launched

Two children have reportedly died after being found unresponsive in a “very hot car” that was parked in the garage of the family home, according to a local prosecutor.

The children, aged two and four, had reportedly suffered cardiac arrests after being in the car during a major heatwave in Carpentras, France.

Police, paramedics and firefighters were called to the Bois de l’Ubac neighbourhood at around 1:10pm today (June 22). Despite resuscitation attempts by emergency services, both children had tragically died.

Carpentras prosecutor Hélène Mourges said: “The causes of death are still under investigation, but the heatwave is the leading theory.”

According to La Provence, the two children reportedly were trapped inside the car but it is currently unclear how the two children got in vehicle at this time.

Their 33-year-old mother, who was home at the time, was reportedly unaware of the kids getting in the car. According to a police source speaking to Le Figaro, the mum had just returned from shopping with the children and is believed to have let them out of the car.

The mother has yet to be questioned by police but is being supported by officers.

France is currently facing a major heatwave with departments placed on red alert by Météo-France.

The children’s death come following three elderly residents in France losing their lives. On Sunday (June 21), the three died in homes in Gironde.

Météo-France said highs of more than 40C (104F)are expected across parts of France. Around 845 schools have also been shut today due to the extreme heat.
