Horror as three plunge to their deaths from 213ft observation tower in Germany
An investigation has begun after emergency services rushed to the Harz Tower in Altenau, Germany, where three people have fallen to their deaths
Three people have plunged to their deaths from a popular tourist viewing platform in Germany.
Emergency services rushed to the Harz Tower in Altenau, in the Goslar district of Lower Saxony, at around 4.40pm today following reports that two males and a female had plunged from the structure.
Despite the desperate efforts of rescue crews at the scene, all three victims could not be saved.
The area surrounding the landmark has been completely cordoned off by police, with privacy screens erected around the site as forensic teams work.
While the exact cause of the horror fall remains unclear, a full investigation has been launched to determine how the tragedy occurred. Local media reports have since confirmed that those involved in the fatal incident were two adults and a child., reports The Mirror.
Local police have issued a statement saying that at this stage they do not believe there has been any negligence from a third party.
t states: “At approximately 4:40 p.m., an emergency call reported that three people had likely died at the Harzturm observation platform. The first responders on the scene found two men and one woman with fatal injuries.
“According to the current state of the investigation, no third-party negligence is found. The area has been cordoned off. The circumstances and background of the incident are the subject of an ongoing investigation.”
It is reported in the German outlet Stern that the three people involved in the tragedy were from the same family and police at this stage of the investigation do not believe that there was a fault with the building.
The tower is operated by Harzturm GmbH, which has not commented yet on the incident but issued a statement on its website saying the tower “will be closed all day on July 17, 2026”.
People have taken to social media to express their sadness at the tragedy and offer their condolences. One person wrote on Facebook: “My sympathy goes out to the family and relatives,” while another similar comment read: “My heart goes out to the family.”
The tower is in Torfhaus, the highest village in Germany’s Harz Mountains, and it is claimed to be the tallest observation tower in the country after being opened to the public in 2024.
Made of wood and steel, it cost around €10m to build and received state funding. It features a glass-floored skywalk at a height of around 45m.
There is access to the top via stairs or a lift, and it boasts a 110m slide which people can go down.
