Walt Disney Imagineering has placed a new audio animatronic figure of Scooter the Muppet inside Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The figure marks the first time the team has applied motion capture to any Muppet character when building an audio animatronic.

Engineers developed a unique miniature motion capture outfit to fit Scooter’s small frame. David Rudman, who has portrayed Scooter on TV and stage for years, put on the suit at a Disney soundstage and got to work. Sensors tracked every movement he made while acting the role, including the trademark flailing arms, bowed shoulders, and timing that fans of the film and television performances are accustomed to.

All of the data gathered on stage was then transferred to computers and used to power the mechanical systems of the final figure. The project team chose motion capture because, to be honest, it was the most direct way to consistently capture Rudman’s performance. Muppet characters have a distinct style that is derived from the experienced puppeteers who perform them live, resulting in a lot of feel and flair. Previously, audio animatronic projects would often begin with video references or manual programming, which could flatten out some of the original energy and timing; however, by capturing the data directly from the performer, the team was able to preserve all of that detail, allowing the robot to repeat it flawlessly every time a guest arrived.

In the official behind-the-scenes segment, one of the Imagineers characterized the session as one in which they created a small motion capture suit, brought Rudman to Disney, and recorded the entire performance in 3D. Then they digitized everything and sent it to the robot, allowing people to experience it exactly as it happened that day. He emphasized that their technique allowed them to integrate some new techniques while remaining true to the unique style of motion that identifies this type of character.

When they were testing it, they would play small loops of the animation repeatedly. To speed up the procedure, the team utilized 3D printing to swiftly build and replace test items. They may make quick changes to elements such as the length of the stick that Scooter holds in his hand. Finally, the finished movements matched the original performance to within millimetres in most situations. It took six weeks to install the monster at Hollywood Studios, which involved connecting all of the media screens and audio systems in Studio C.

When riders travel by this area of the attraction, they will notice Scooter moving in a style that appears to be straight out of a Muppet production. The figure gives the authentic Scooter experience that the team was striving for, and they feel that the same techniques might be used to bring other extremely unique performance styles to life in future audio animatronic reproductions of different characters.
