Majorca airport on ‘pre-alert’ after ‘explosions heard’ as blaze sparked nearby

The British holiday hotspot of Mallorca has seen its main airport, Palma de Mallorca Airport, declare it is on “pre-alert” after a major blaze broke out at a factory nearby

A popular airport for British holidaymakers has been put on “pre-alert” after reports of explosion being heard nearby as smoke appears close above the runway.

Palma de Mallorca Airport is preparing for potential disruption to flights to and from the holiday hotspot caused by a fire at a nearby factory plant. Reports suggest the fire is at Mercapalma main food storage plant and has since spread to vehicles parked outside the site this afternoon (July 6).

Images and video taken from the scene show smoke in the sky close to the airport’s runway. As of writing the incident has reportedly not caused an impact on the airport.

The National Police and Palma Fire Brigade are working on the scene. the Mallorca Daily Bulletin has reported that two firefighters have been treated for smoke inhalation.

People living in the area have been asked not to leave their homes while they continuing to control the blaze.

Fire crews had been reportedly struggling with containing the blaze due to it spreading to a fuel storage depot based on the same site.

One witness wrote on X: “A fire in a truck at Mercapalma has triggered alarm at Palma Airport due to the large column of smoke. Right now, firefighters are at the scene trying to extinguish the flames.”

President of the Balearic Islands Marga Prohens wrote on X: “We are closely following the fire declared at Mercapalma.

“All emergency services are working there in a coordinated manner to control the fire and guarantee safety at all times.

“We appreciate their swift action and ask to follow only the information from official channels.”

A spokesperson for Aena, who operates Palma de Mallorca Airport, said: “At the moment it is not affecting operations.”
