Montreal shooting: ‘3 killed’ as police ‘shot dead suspect’ after storming Hilton hotel
A major police operation has been launched in Montreal, Canada, after reports of gunshots being heard and at least three people being injured in the area of Décarie Boulevard and Plamondon Street
Gunshots have been heard in an area of Montreal, Canada, with reports of at least three have been killed after armed cops stormed the Hilton Hotel.
A major operation has been launched by police with paramedics also called to the area of Décarie Boulevard and Plamondon Street today (June 22). The area has been completely locked down by police.
Video shared on social media show several Montreal Police Service (SPVM) officers in the area as gunshots can be heard in other footage.
The suspect was described as “armed and dangerous” by local media outlets. According to Le Journal De Quebec, a suspect has been shot dead by police. Some media outlets are reporting that the suspect opened fire from the Hilton Hotel with some suggesting from the roof. The suspect was reportedly dressed in military attire.
According to Canadian publication La Presse, one person has died and two police officers were wounded by gunshots. However, only one officer has been confirmed as injured by police.
Jean-Pierre Brabant, a spokesperson with Montreal police, said: “We are asking everyone to avoid the sector. The situation is not under control. During the operation, there was an officer that was injured.”
The Montreal Police Service has since confirmed that a police officer died. The force said on X: “It is with immense sadness that we confirm the death of one of our police officers in the line of duty.”
The other two people to have died are reportedly the suspect and a civilian. A female officer is also reportedly been injured and in a critical condition.
François Lemieux, a worker who was travelling in the area, said he heard “about thirty gunshots and I heard the bullets pass close”, in an interview with Le Journal De Quebec.
Residents were urged to return to their homes and to remain inside. An emergency alert was also sent to all phone in the area regarding an “armed and dangerous” suspect in the area.
The message said: “This is an alert issued by Quebec Emergency Response Team. Police are investigating an armed and dangerous suspect in the Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood of Montreal.
“In the targeted zone: take shelter indoors, lock doors, stay away from windows, and follow the instructions of local authorities.”
Ian Lafrenière, the Minister of Homeland Security in Canada, urged the public to “avoid the area” and “stay indoors”.
In his post on X, he added: “My thoughts are with the families of the injured.”
Transports Québec has announced the closure of Highway 15, Route 136 and Highway 40 at Décarie Boulevard due to “police operations” at around 12:21pm local time.
