Sky diver’s terrifying last moments as she plunged to her death in ‘high-risk’ landing

WARNING: DISTRESSING CONTENT At just 29 Melissa Porter plummeted to her death while attempting a ‘swooping’ landing – one which was considered very risky for someone who isn’t an experienced skydiver

Melissa Porter had years of experience when it came to sky diving and yet her expertise were not enough to save her from this tragic death.

Melissa died “doing what she loved” on June 24, 2023, at a diving facility in Houston, Texas, where she worked as an instructor. She had been skydiving for years, and so it was a shock to everyone that her hobby, which she had turned into a job, would take her life.

As a record-holding Australian skydiver from Perth, Porter was an extreme sportsperson who even won gold at the Australian championships earlier that year. And so, venturing up into the sky and attempting a dive back down to earth was something she could practically do with her eyes closed.

On that very day, the 29-year-old had set out to attempt a ‘swooping’ landing manoeuvre, one that was considered ‘high-risk’. Although as she came towards the end of her dive, she experienced a hard and heavy landing.

In the world of skydiving, swooping is something that involves a number of difficult manoeuvres that allow jumpers to ‘swoop’ at high speeds over the ground or water. The movement is then levelled off very quickly before a quick landing.

Mel was an experienced skydiver before her death

It was reported that her parachute deployed, but she landed in shallow water. Porter was rushed to a hospital nearby, and it was there she was pronounced dead.

The New York Post stated investigators claimed to have not noticed any blunt force trauma to her body and were unsure if she had suffered a medical emergency during the dive.

According to her mother, Vonnie Porter, her daughter had dreamt about skydiving since childhood. She told Australia’s Nine News: “She died doing what she loved. She loved it; that’s her happy place.”

Meanwhile, her colleague at Skydive Spaceland Houston, Nicholas Lott said: “Mel was a magical person who touched the hearts of many people in the 40 countries she visited in her 29 years.

“She had finally found a place that felt like home here in Texas, but unfortunately she wasn’t able to stay as long as any of us would have hoped. Those close to her have found great solace in the fact that she passed doing what she truly loved.”

Her tragic death didn’t come long after one of her greatest achievements when she and her skydiving partner Josh Tassicker won gold at the Australian Skydiving Championships. They competed in the two-way Inter-Vertical Formation Skydiving category at Hillman Farm Skydiving Club and took home the gold medal.

At the time she told the Sound Telegraph: “It was a shock when we took gold but it’s been amazing — it definitely makes me want to compete further.”

Her mother added: “That was her happy place. She’ll forever be in the sky roaming the world now.”
