Super Mario World Remastered Puts a Fresh Coat on Dinosaur Land for PC

Super Buzzy Yoshi released Super Mario World Remastered for PC this week as a custom campaign inside Super Mario Bros. X2. You install SMBX2 Beta 5 Patch 4 first, drop the project folder into the worlds directory, then pick the campaign from the list on the left side of the screen. The entire adventure runs through the fan engine, thus no standalone executable or ROM file is required.
Updated tilesets give the game a fresh look by replacing outdated assets with crisper sprites, which are typically derived from MFGG community packs, as well as totally new backgrounds. Many levels also have a different parallax treatment, which allows your eyes to watch distant hills, clouds, and the sky layer moving at their own pace. The original 16-bit game’s graphic cut-offs for clipping tiles have been removed, and the HUD elements have been updated. Do not fear, the pixel look remains quite recognizable. Fortunately (or unfortunately), there is no attempt to turn the game into a full 2.5D platformer.

Level layouts have been adjusted to fit well inside SMBX2 and even on larger monitors, and do you remember the original arrangement of the world map? Yes, Yoshi’s Island continues to be the first stop, followed by Donut Plains, Vanilla Dome, Forest of Illusion, Chocolate Island, Star Road, and the Special Zone. Instead of a complete overhaul, the developers used all of the extra room in the engine to add some custom behavior and a more refined presentation. The global map now plays the remixed overworld music from Aqua MIDI, and there are already some highlight videos for the world map, individual secret levels, a handful of castles, the bonus game, and the conclusion sequence.

Physics-wise, the game uses the same rules as SMBX2, which means movement, jumps, and opponent interactions will feel similar to Super Mario World, but not identical. Some athletes observed a difference immediately away. The engine can also handle all of the unique assets and scripting that allow this campaign to exist in the first place, without being limited by the hardware of a Super Nintendo cartridge.

Super Buzzy Yoshi makes it very clear that Nintendo owns the copyrights and that this effort is not a replacement for the original game. You know how it goes with fan efforts like this: they can vanish without warning. So, if you want to get your hands on the game, the download link can be found on Google Drive. First, download SMBX2 from Codehaus. Next, apply the required patch, then place the folder “Super Mario World Remastered” within the “worlds” folder of the SMBX2 main directory, and the campaign will magically be on the list.
