Hundreds killed and 185 injured as swathes of terror attacks hit country
A terrifying 27 per cent spike in terror attacks left hundreds dead and 185 injured in May as suicide bombings and abductions skyrocketed
A terrifying wave of bloodshed has gripped Pakistan as a major surge in militant violence left hundreds dead and 185 others injured in just one month. A new report has exposed the deep-seated terrorism threats plaguing the nation, revealing that militancy-driven violence skyrocketed by a massive 27 per cent last month compared to the month before.
According to a monthly security assessment released on Monday (June 1, 2026) by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), “militant and terror groups regained momentum during May after a brief period of relative decline.”
The statistics paint a picture of the escalating crisis as 128 terrorist attacks tore through the country in May, up from 101 in April. A total of 71 civilians, 68 security personnel and six members of peace committees were killed.
An additional 147 civilians, 35 security personnel and three peace committee members were left wounded in the chaos.
Civilian deaths nearly doubled, leaping 92 per cent from 37 to 71. Meanwhile, the death toll for security forces saw a staggering 143 per cent surge, climbing from 28 to 68 in the space of four weeks.
A major factor behind the soaring body count was a devastating rise in kamikaze-style attacks. The country was rocked by six suicide bombings in May, including four explosive-rigged vehicles, which alone claimed the lives of 34 security personnel and nine civilians.
By comparison, March and April saw just one suicide bombing each, signalling a dramatic and deadly escalation in tactics by terror networks.
The PICSS report states: “Militant and terror groups regained momentum during May after a brief period of relative decline.”
The region of Balochistan bore the brunt of the carnage as terror attacks there more than doubled, exploding by 109 per cent from 34 in April to 71 in May.
Lawlessness has also sparked a horrifying kidnapping epidemic. Out of 54 abductions recorded across the entire country last month, 52 took place in Balochistan alone.
In response to the unprecedented wave of terror, security forces have ramped up their counter-terrorism operations. Armed forces managed to eliminate 270 militants and capture 15 others during the high-stakes month.
The majority of the neutralised fighters were taken out in the former FATA districts (128), followed by Balochistan (71), mainland Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (62) and Punjab (1).
