Japan-Exclusive Midnight Black PS5 Digital Edition Arrives November 19 for 55000 Yen

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced a new Midnight Black version of the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition that remains available only inside Japan. The console carries model number CFI-2200B02S and carries a suggested retail price of 55,000 yen including tax. Preorders open at PlayStation retailers and online stores across the country on October 20, with the actual launch set for November 19. That date lines up with the worldwide release of Grand Theft Auto VI, though Sony has not framed the timing as anything more than a shared calendar slot.

Inside the shell, the hardware is nearly identical to the Japanese-only Digital Edition that initially appeared last year. Buyers receive an 825GB special SSD, the same custom AMD processor, 16GB of GDDR6 RAM, and complete support for the console’s lightning-fast storage, 3D audio, and backward compatibility with the majority of the PlayStation 4 games they downloaded. The box includes a DualSense wireless controller in the same Midnight Black as the rest of the pack, as well as two stand feet that let the console to be positioned horizontally, an HDMI cable, a power cord, a USB cable, and Astro’s Playroom pre-installed.

System language stays locked to Japanese and the console accepts only PlayStation Network accounts whose country or region setting is Japan. That is what prevents it from operating properly with other accounts and from being easily exported. Sony claims that this is a lower-cost option for the domestic market, since they already sell a white Japanese-only Digital edition for the same price.

If you need physical discs, you can get a matching Midnight Black disc drive for 11,980 yen on the same day. This is an accessory that attaches to the console’s side, and pairing it requires an internet connection. Once attached, it allows you to play bundled versions of PS5 and PS4 games. Sony also stated that all new PlayStation games released after January 2028 will be available only for download; however, current disc versions of older titles will continue to work.

The rich black finish complements some of the other Midnight Black accessories that are already available, such as the PlayStation Portal remote player. So if you like the style, you can pretty much synchronize everything. Anyone who purchases this and registers it by March 31st, 2027 will additionally receive an extended warranty that increases the usual one year to a total of two years. Outside of Japan, the same design is pretty much available with some separate Midnight Black console covers and the current Midnight Black DualSense, but it will cost a little more and still display the original white console underneath.
