Trump says ‘agreement with Iran is largely negotiated’ but makes chilling promise

It is not the first time that the end of the war has seemed in sight, but experts are making positive noises around Donald Trump’s announcement on Truth Social this evening a deal has been ‘largely negotiated’

Donald Trump has announced a peace deal between the US and Iran has been “largely negotiated”. The US president posted on Truth Social saying: “An Agreement has been largely negotiated, subject to finalization between the United States of America, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the various other Countries, as listed.

“Final aspects and details of the Deal are currently being discussed, and will be announced shortly. In addition to many other elements of the Agreement, the Strait of Hormuz will be opened.”

No specific timetable for the peace deal has been laid out, and this is not the first time the end of the war has seemed in sight. Both the US and Iran have also chillingly doubled down on the threat of military action should the deal not hold.

Elsewhere this evening (May 23) Trump had revealed he’d just got off a “very good call” with Gulf state mediators. He wrote: “An Agreement has been largely negotiated, subject to finalization between the United States of America, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the various other Countries, as listed.”

Iran’s ambassador to Pakistan, Reza Amiri Moghadam, has said a “positive stride” is taking shape if the US is “adequately committed” to ending the war.

Moghadam said: “With conservative optimism, we can hope that – if the other side is adequately committed – a positive stride is taking shape which is the result of the positions of the Islamic Republic of Iran based on dignity, the steadfastness of the courageous armed forces, and the resistance of the brave Iranian nation, as well as the initiative and dedicated endeavours of the Pakistani mediator.”

Iran has called for an end to fighting on all fronts and has demanded that a deal must include Lebanon, which has been subject to Israeli airstrikes in recent weeks.

Iran also wants an end to assassinations, as well as a guarantee against future US-Israeli attacks. It has also asked for war reparations.

On the subject of the Strait of Hormuz, Iran has demanded its sovereignty be recognised and said it will reopen the shipping route if the US ends its naval blockade.
